Profile

Are you Vegetarian, Vegan or something else?
I am a vegan because I believe in treating all animals with kindness. Just as we should own our bodies and the fruits of our own labor, so should all animals. I grew up vegetarian with an anarchist dad and an incredibly open-minded mom. A little more than 4 years ago I went vegan after interning and working at Farm Sanctuary in Orland, California.
About Me:
We are most effective in spreading our message of compassion when we can appeal to people of all stripes. It's too easy for people to dismiss (or ignore) the substantive message of compassion and respect for all beings if we can't appeal or fit into mainstream culture because we're seen as too fringe. It's OK to dress like a hippy or sport tons of tattoos. But it's also OK and in no way "un-vegan" to wear a suit. So was that clear as mud?

I love writing, spending time with my dogs, volunteering for animals, going to the northwoods, traveling with people, listening to talk radio, discussing politics, reading, and fixing up my home. I will be on Curb Appeal in early 2008!

I consider myself a libertarian, and have thought about running for office someday. I believe in getting government out of our lives.

I read your note on prads page and it occurred to me that your explanation of libertarianism is very similar to the pagan approach "do what thou wilt, harm none"

nick, that is an excellent answer!

i think the true libertarian philosophy as you have expressed it has been completely mangled by 'organized' Libertarianism as so often happens with good ideas whenever they get big and capitalized :D. small is beautiful as schumacher says, eh?

on a chess site, i had 2 friends one who was a libertarian, philosophy grad student (he's prof by now) and an ar activist; the other was an anarchist with a clear understanding of intentional communities (though he hadn't quite managed to make the connection to non-humans, yet). naturally, they were misunderstood by many, but i think they influenced many in a positive way too.

it seems the only way to freedom is through self-control, self-discipline and empathy. a tall order, perhaps, but so is life, i suppose.

do walk your own way and may others learn from the example you set!

i hope we'll see your ideas and ideals on the forums once you get settled in here.

prad

greetings nick! glad you are here.

i am curious to know your opinion on how libertarianism relates to animal rights. as a libertarian, you can certainly choose to be an ar advocate. however, does not that same 'freedom of choice' allow another to be very anti-animal?

also, if the government is a good, honest and fair one (i realize this may be mere wishful thinking), then should it not be 'in our lives' rather than be 'gotten out'.

in friendship,
prad
