Vegans & Vegetarians making a difference!

Tresa (MEAT: No Rx Needed)

Embarassing personal question....

I almost wish I could post this "anonymously" but I'm sure somebody here has an answer to my problem.

We all know that "Vegans poop more." But, I'm having mostly watery diarrhea. My Naturpathic doctor wants me to relent and just use some specific live-culture yogurt - but I will not be an accessory to any animal crimes.

I do eat bananas almost every day. I drink a lot of water and have also added rice milk. I don't have any abdominal cramps, just "instant" urgency and the aforementioned.

Thank goodness for Charmin with lotion!

This happens to me after drinking more than one cup of coffee, or eating curry. But certainly not every day. I'll be watching to see what other people come up with. Good Luck!

Did you have your gallbladder checked? I know, if this doesn't work properly, you can be cursed with the 'runs' like that... Even though as far as I know this is for people who eat lots of fatty and spicy food..
I hope you'll find out the cause for your inconvenience!

Namaste! :)

your doc probably asked you to eat live-culture yogurt because your body is low on natural microflora (natural microflora lines the intestinal tract which help with food digestion). Side note: a lot of people have your problem when they take antibiotics because the medication kills the NMF.
Besides eating the yogurt, i have no idea what you can do. Talk to your doc about alternatives.

Have you looked for soy yogurt? The one I get has live cultures in it. It might help get your digestive system back on track. Anyway, good luck.

I concur - try soy yogurt. :) Whole Soy & Co. & Silk are both good brands, but the Silk tastes a little better to me.

...but failing all else, move in with someone who owns a bidet. ;-)

You can get vegan probiotic capsules. Take these instead of the crappy milky drink, which will do you on good at all ! What are you eating ? Wheat ? Is the poop all the time ? Or just on occasion ? Does it smell bad ?Have you just changed your diet ?

If you can stomach it very strong tea will help with Diarrhea, steeped for 20 mins, the tannins in the tea have astringent qualities.
Slippery elm is an excellent herb to use for diarrhea, you can get this at health food stores, power or capsule.
If it is happening a lot you really should get your poo checked make sure there is no underlying causes of it.

bigG is correct.

the problem is probably lies with your body trying to get rid of something that shouldn't have been consumed in the first place. if it is chronic then the source can be traced to either what is being eaten now (both he and vegan val have asked about dietary fat) or what has built up from past habits and the body is trying to get rid of. some people who have become veg may experience cleansing issues over the first couple of years.

good for you not to give in to this live-culture yogurt nonsense (though sheena and amber both made a good suggestion with the soy yogurt)! if your intestinal flora has been depleted (eg possibly as a result of antibiotics as melissa said), you can replenish it with acidophilus and bifidus capsules. also, you might try full spectrum enzymes with your meals. all this stuff is available at your local health food store, of course and may help facilitate parts of your digestive process, though they should not be looked upon as 'cures'. you need to find out what is causing your body to do what it is doing.

there isn't any need to drink a 'lot of water'. one drinks when one is thirsty and if you are being dehydrated then your body should let you know. trusting your body and understanding it, is far more important than consulting with the myriad of experts each who will offer a pet solution - from bananas to leeches to kaopectate.

possibly you could provide some info about what you do eat, so we have somewhere to start from.

btw, it's not so much that 'vegans poop more' as the meaters tend to be constipated - though quantitatively i suppose it amounts to the same thought.

in friendship,
prad
